In 1964, with no assets, Tom and Judy Love incorporated Musket Corporation, the predecessor to Love's Country Stores, and leased an abandoned filling station in Watonga, Oklahoma.
This was repeated in about 40 stations until 1972 when the first Love's Country Store opened in Guymon, Oklahoma.
With this first store came another first: a convenience store with self-service gasoline which was unknown in most of the country at that time.
Through the early 1970's, an event occurred that changed the way economics worked around the globe. OPEC embargoed oil shipments to the U.S. allegedly for support of Israel during the Middle East War earlier.
When filling stations were forced to close because of price and fuel allocations, Love's, through hard work and reduced margins, earned a lot of customer good will.
By 1981, Love's had successfully operated 90 combination convenience and filling station stores across Oklahoma and other surrounding states. And now Love's moved to the interstate highways for the first time in Amarillo, Texas with the new, larger Love's Travel Stop.
Love's introduced quick serve restaurants in 1992 with a Taco Bell Express unit in an Oklahoma City travel stop. That was followed with additional Taco Bell units and other food choices in the locations. These concepts include Arby's, Carl's Jr., Chester's Fried Chicken, Godfather's Pizza, Hardee's, and McDonalds's. There are over 120 of these concepts in Love's convenience stores and travel stops.
In 2000, Love's Country Stores debuted in Forbes Magazine's annual listing of America's largest private companies at a ranking of 446 out of 500. By 2007, Forbes ranked Love's Travel Stops No. 42 on the list.
Today, Love's has more than 200 locations and employs almost 6,000 people in more than 30 states.
With annual sales exceeding $12 billion, Love's is a proven leader in the travel stop and services industry and is continuing to grow. It's growth rate is approximately 15 locations a year.
